Is your website GDPR compliant?

If you sell products or collect customer data online you will need an SSL Certificate applied to your website. This is now law.

84% of online shoppers say they abandon a purchase when they suspect that the website is insecure.

SSL gives your website a padlock or green browser bar, reassuring visitors they’re safe on your site. Google favours secure websites so SSL Certificates do help to increase your search engine ranking too. From July 2018, Google Chrome marked all non-SSL sites as “not secure” before a visitor sees your website. It currently marks SSL-encrypted websites with a green padlock icon and “Secure” sign.

In May 2018 the Law is changing

From 25th May 2018, General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) came into force. The new regulations are fairly complex but include clear rulings on the online transfer of any personal data. By this date all data transfers must be encrypted by law, not just to comply with a Google safe guarding initiative. This includes contact form submissions, email subscriptions and even data passed from Google Analytics. You will hear a lot about GDPR the closer the deadline gets, as businesses rush to secure their websites and avoid ranking drops. If you process any kind of personal data online you will not be able to ignore it.

What you need to do

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Does your website have any kind of text input, this includes contact forms, search boxes, login pages, or shopping carts?
  2. Does your web address start with http:// in the address bar?

If you have answered yes to both of these questions you need to act quickly.

SSL certificates are available for an annual fee. If you want to apply one to your current website yourself you will need to contact your host who should give you the technical process details you will need to perform to activate the SSL Certificate. Go Daddy are currently charging £65.99 for a certificate.
